Since I have a baby and she has a room I’ve wanted to make a craft to decorate with a mobile. I’ve found butterfly mobiles but I really like this one with flowers. You can buy these for around $50 from Pottery Barn or make it yourself.

This tutorial is more of a ball than a mobile, and it’s so pretty.

Items needed:
floral wire
fabric (or fake) flowers
tacky glue

I plan to make a flower version of the butterfly mobile, using the techniques from the flower ball tutorial. Even though I’m focusing on a baby’s room, these would be pretty decorations for a wedding reception or lunch. I’ll post a picture when (or if) I get around to making this. If you make it, let me know how it goes!

Today’s tutorial comes from the YoungHouseLove blog (click for full instructions).

I’m a big advocate of having fresh flowers on your table year round. One thing that stopped me in the past is that I didn’t know how to cut or arrange flowers so they looked good. I plopped them in a vase and they would sprawl out in every direction. It wasn’t pretty.

After working at a florist I learned to use florist tape to section off the top of a vase and support stems. But that’s extra work. Today I just make sure I cut the stems shorter and let the vase support the flowers.

This leads me to my selection – a simple way to display a few stems in a clear  round vase. It’s elegant and inexpensive to do.

These vases are easy to find at thrift stores and are not that much from a florist shop either. Notice that the top of the flower either almost reaches the top of the vase, or is just under it. Just use whatever flowers you have and you too can transform an ordinary table or entry into a bit of enchantment. You could even use silk flowers for a year-round accent piece.

This picture was taken by Junebug Weddings. I’m not sure who designed the flowers.

Today’s tutorial is so much fun. I love how creative bloggers can be! One of my favorite flowers is called a “Billy ball.” They are yellow and round and so unique.

This tutorial is for a flower decoration that is made out of something unexpected – Q tips! The blogger who made them was inspired by decor at an Anthropolgie store. That store always has the best DIY craft/decor ideas!

These flowers are a gorgeous shade of turquoise but you could make them any color you want. You could also make these larger or smaller and even skip the stems and hang them from the ceiling in a child’s room. I can imagine a group of 3, sort of like a funky Chinese lantern.

The tutorial comes from the HomemadeGinger blog – click to read the entire thing. You could make these with kids they are so easy!

Items needed:

Q-tips
Styrofoam balls
fake flowers (for the stem)
food coloring

English: Flower arrangements inside the Crysta...

Flowers in a Las Vegas mall (source: Wikipedia).

Everyone, this new year I’ve resolved to blog more often on this blog. Today is the first day of 2012 and most of the country is freezing cold and the skies are overcast. This is the perfect time to buy flowers. Having fresh flowers in your house livens the mood. You don’t have to buy a lot or make it fancy, just pick whatever speaks to you or looks especially pretty.

Have you ever been to Las Vegas? We celebrated the holidays there this year. I just love the landscaping there, even inside the malls. They do incredible designs. There are fresh flowers everywhere at the nicest hotels, that’s one thing that sets apart a cheap hotel from a fancy one – fresh flowers. The Bellagio gardens are just one example.

While walking around the strip, I bought a single white rose from a street vendor and put it in our room. It made me happy and brought some originality to the room. I hope you’ll take time to add flowers to your life this year too.

Here’s what you can expect from Florist-Review this year:

Tutorial Tuesdays – this is where I post a tutorial that I love. It may or may not be floral related, but hopefully it will inspire you.

Wedding Flower Wednesdays – this day I will post my favorite wedding flowers and bouquets.

Fresh Flower Fridays – I’ll feature fresh flowers and unique ways to use them in decorating or whatever flower arrangements caught my eye that week. Some of these will be pictures I actually took myself – especially while on vacation. I love flower shops and it will give me an extra reason to visit them. I may even do an occasional review.

If you want to participate, please comment with links to your favorite tutorials or links to your favorite flower pictures. I might feature it on the blog.

Happy New Year everyone – may it be full of joy!

Baby Girl Flowers

What to get for a new baby girl? Send Flowers!

I just gave birth to our beautiful baby Alexis 4 days ago. We are totally

Flowers I got when I had my baby girl

in love with her – she’s beautiful and we’re in constant awe of her. We love everything about her and l love seeing her with her dad or just when she’s looking around at the world. It was a lot of work getting her here but we’re so glad she’s part of our family.

It should not be surprising how much I love flowers. I started this web site because of it. So when Alexis’ grandparents came to the hospital with a small vase of pink roses I was so moved. I put them on my table in the hospital so I could see them at all times. They reminded me how much this baby meant to our extended family who haven’t had a newborn in a long time. The flowers personalize the hospital room. If I could’ve I would’ve had flowers in the delivery room so I could look at them when things got tough. They would visually remind me of the end result of all what was coming next – our baby!

I actually got 3 flower arrangements – short stem pink baby roses with baby’s breath, and 2 flower arrangements from an ftd florist that have a mix of colors.

It still tears me up hearing my mother-in-law try to talk her work out of having her come in (she was on call). She really wanted to be with us.

Then this morning there was a knock on the door. A flower delivery person stood at my door holding a sweet pink vase full of flowers. I brought them inside, already in tears (do baby girls really make you more emotional? I feel like it! There is also the sleep deprivation and hormones). They were sent my our uncle who lives in Iowa. I was so moved. I put them on our kitchen table. They cheer me up and remind me of this celebration and the love of our family. I’ve been married to my husband for 3 years and this experience has bonded me to his side of the family. I feel honored to be a part of the love that’s there.

So if you ever wonder what to get a new mom or baby, flowers can communicate a lot. They last several days when everything is new and remind people of the special event that has happened in the life of a family. When I delivered flowers in college my favorite were to homes with new babies. I could feel the warmth and happy celebration just from the looks on everyone’s faces. But mostly the feeling in the room. One family invited me inside and the atmosphere was so beautiful that I wished I could stay.

My preference is for something simple. A simple, small vase with a classic mix of flowers. I’m not one for fancy baby vases (like in the shape of a teddy bear or something). That’s what says baby to me. I’m giving the flowers to the new mom but they should look like they are in honor of the birth. It’s also easier to carry out a small arrangement (you leave with so much stuff).

Mother’s Day is only 3 days away and I’m feeling overwhelmed thinking of a gift. Of course this is a flower blog and what else could be on my mind? Today I picked up a gorgeous orchid plant for myself (don’t tell). It looks perfect in my living room. But now for my mom…

1800Flowers is running commercials on tv with some of their Mother’s Day flowers and I fell in love with this one. Most of the time Mother’s day arrangements are the same thing you are used to seeing, but this new bouquet is refreshingly unique. It’s also affordable.

It’s called Tote-ally Mom™ and instead of a vase it comes in a beautiful tote full of flowers. Prices start at just $30. I love it. Plus the tote is made from canvas and she can reuse it (she will want to, it’s so stylish). So to me this gift does double duty.

One of my favorite things to do is to find a vase or holder that is unexpected, not the usual clear vase you always see. I also don’t want it overly frilly or unique, because that doesn’t fit my style (or my mom’s). This fits the bill. Your mom will love it (so will mine). And when you see her with the tote later in the year it will remind both of you of your mother’s day gift. I’d pack my lunch for work in mine.

The tote comes with the following flowers: roses, alstroemeria, daisies, poms, waxflower and pittosporum

I can’t wait to see her reaction!

The Meaning of White Roses

White roses present many emotions. As a full bloom, when given to a bride, it signifies happy love. As a rosebud it is really symbolic of girlhood. As a full bloom, given other than to a bride, it means purity, silence, secrecy, humility, innocence, reverence, youthfulness, being heavenly and to state “I am worthy of you”.

White roses are a beautiful symbol of honor and they are used to express remembrance as well. White roses can look pretty mixed with pink roses.

The Meaning of Pink Roses

The Meaning of Pink Roses

Have you ever wondered what PINK ROSES mean? Pink roses convey the emotions of appreciation, grace, admiration, perfect happiness, gentleness, and to say, “thank you” or “please believe me”.

Generally, pink is a great choice at the beginning of a relationship to show you admire the person. Pink roses are a symbol of elegance also. If you want to covey a more gentle image, pink roses are the right choice.

I prefer to give pink roses to a new mom who just had a baby girl. It was a popular choice for people when I worked at a florist. I like them mixed with yellow roses.

The Meaning of Yellow Roses

Did you know? Someone who gives you yellow roses at the beginning of a relationship is saying that they are falling in love with you.

Yellow roses with red tips on them show a warm friendship with a feeling of falling in love. When someone gives you such a bouquet, they are saying, “I am falling in love with you”.

Yellow roses have many more meanings: they can be a symbol of joy, delight, jealousy, gladness, friendship and new beginnings. Sometimes yellow roses show a promise of a new beginning or a welcoming back. They also portray a feeling of jealousy, caring and the wanting of being remembered by you.

Yellow roses show warmth and happiness in a true friendship. If you receive yellow roses from your best friend, I think it is safe to say she meant friendship.

I like to think of yellow roses as cheerful and bright – and as make ideal “get well flowers” to send when someone is sick or needs some happiness in their life.

What do Black Roses Mean?

One Halloween I decided to give my boyfriend black roses. I was surprised by the dramatic effect they have. As far as I know there are no such things as black roses. They are simply spray painted. Done right they look amazing.

Since it’s just two days until Halloween, I thought I’d answer this question: what do black roses mean?

Here’s what black roses can mean: a black rose signifies death and farewell. It is like a silent goodbye. A black rose can be symbolic of the end of a life or the end of a relationship.

So the next time you want to break up with someone or going to a funeral that is particularly sad to you, you might want to order a bouquet of black roses.

Or, take any flower bouquet and add a spider, ghosts or other details to make it Halloweenish.
